Dr Mark Orkin has been Director-General of Palama (the Public Administration Leadership and Management Institute) in South Africa since 2006.  He was previously CEO of the statutory Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), and Head of the national statistics office, Stats SA. Before South Africa's transition to democracy in 1994 he was a Professor in the Faculty of Management at the University of the Witwatersrand, on both the Business School and Public Management sides; and founder-director of CASE, an anti-apartheid social-research NGO. He has a PhD in quantitative sociology and has authored or co-authored has some fifty social-scientific publications in scientific journals and books. Email morkin@mweb.co.za.
